Sometimes playing two sports can help.

Escambia County volleyball coach Stephanie Buitron, who also coaches softball, said the girls who play softball and volleyball serve with more power, and is looking for the girls to build off of last year.

This season, the Lady Blue Devils will rotate three seniors and a good bunch from last season’s junior varsity squad. The seniors include captain Khadasia Craft, Elizabeth Thames and Vykedria Williams.

Buitron said the setter is Breanna McGowan; the outside hitter is Jayla Adams; libero is Jasmine Bryant; and the number one position holder is Corteyia Martin.

In area action this year, ECHS will compete in Class 4A, Area 1 with defending state champion Bayside Academy, UMS-Wright, W.S. Neal and Williamson.

Buitron said the girls have set a big goal for the year.

“The biggest goal, last year, we came in fourth in the area,” she said. “We want to go up one.”

Buitron added that the girls are taking it one year at a time, and are working hard to get better.

First serve for ECHS will be next Thurs., Aug. 29, at home against Flomaton. Middle school begins play at 4 p.m., followed by junior varsity and varsity action.
