Flomaton’s Franklin, Johnson lead Canes to quarterfinals
Flomaton’s Daquan Johnson converted a 2-point conversion with 16 seconds left, and the Hurricanes held on to beat St. James 20-19 in the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs tonight at home.
Jate’vius “Tank” Franklin threw a touchdown pass to Johnson for a touchdown to cut the game to 19-18 before the game-winning conversion.
During the fourth quarter, FHS trailed 19-6. At halftime, the Trojans led 10-6 after a 33-yard field goal from Jan Wachowitz.
Earlier in the second quarter, Franklin scored on a 1-yard rush with 10:45, and the 2-point conversion failed.
St. James drew blood first on a 1-yard touchdown rush from quarterback Drew Fett with 7:08 in the first quarter.
With the win, the Hurricanes (10-1) advance to play region foe T.R. Miller in the quarterfinals next week.
TRM defeated Montgomery Academy 21-14 in the second round.
