Escambia County’s Trevon Lambert and Sheldon Williams scored 10 points each to help lead the Blue Devils to a season-opening 44-34 victory over Monroe County on Nov. 14 at home.

The Blue Devils led 25-16 at halftime, and outscored the Tigers 19-18 in the second half.

In the first half, ECHS point guard Allen Patterson picked up a couple of fouls early, which hampered the Blue Devils’ offensive production a bit, coach John Shears said.

In the second half, the Blue Devils attacked the basket, and played good defense, the coach said.

“We played good defense all night,” Shears said about his coaching debut. “I was very impressed with how we played.”

Shears said overall, the team did make mistakes, but they are correctable, including missing free throws.

At present, the Blue Devils sit at 1-1 on the season as of Nov. 18. ECHS lost 57-47 to B.C. Rain on Nov. 15.

Shears said all of his players played on the football team, and will be utilizing an up-tempo offense during the season.

In girls action, the Lady Blue Devils topped MCHS 40-31.

Jayla Adams led ECHS with 16 points, and C’Anna Betts contributed with 11.
