Sheriff Heath Jackson said in a release today the person who was injured in the police-involved shooting is alleged to have committed numerous car thefts and armed car jackings that spanned over multiple counties in Alabama.

Jackson said officers with the Poarch Creek Tribal Police made contact with the suspect at the Creek Travel Plaza on Jack Springs Road in Atmore today.

“After being approached by uniformed officers and marked patrol vehicles, an altercation ensued forcing officers to discharge their firearms,” Jackson said. “The suspect was injured and transported by EMS to the hospital for treatment. All officers involved managed to avoid injury and we are thankful for their professional and quick response to such a dangerous situation.”
Jackson said then the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency was requested to conduct the investigation, and that it’s standard practice with officer-involved shootings that take place in Escambia County, Ala.
