Brooks said investigators had outstanding warrants for attempted murder and domestic violence I on Maurice White, 49, also of Atmore. White was arrested today by APD and the Alabama Department of Corrections’ K-9 bureau.

Brooks said on Feb. 19, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the APD responded to the Patterson Street Apartment complex in response to a male victim being assaulted with a firearm.

“On arrival, APD officers discovered the male victim, later identified as Donald Dewayne Dortch, 58 years old, from Atmore, lying in the street with severe lacerations to the face from what appeared to be a gunshot injury,” he said. “Dortch was immediately transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital. Dortch was later transferred by life flight to a medical facility in Pensacola.”

Brooks said APD officers learned during the investigation that Dortch was inside an apartment when two male suspects entered the apartment without consent of the owner, and allegedly began assaulting Dortch.

“The assailants then fled the scene when police were called,” Brooks said. “One of the suspects was identified as an ex-boyfriend of the female resident of the apartment.”
