Escambia County routs Monroe County 42-0 in Monroeville
Escambia County put together a complete game and the Blue Devils beat Monroe County 42-0 to win their first game of the year tonight in Monroeville.
Head football coach Scott Mason said he was proud of the effort, and the boys ran the ball well.
“We’ve ran the ball well all year, and we found a way to do two steps forward, and then three steps back.”
Mason said Mason Huggins, James Whatley and Anthony McCants ran the ball well for ECHS tonight, noting that the team combined for 300 yards on the ground.
“(Quarterback) Dakota Despain threw some real good passes,” Mason added. “The defense played lights out tonight.
“This is the most complete game we’ve played all year,” he added. “We’ve actually gotten better all year. Playing in the region (Class 4A, Region 1) we’re playing in, you can’t see it.”
Mason said this win is a spark.
“We just needed a spark. That’s what we wanted. We wanted some good things to happen, and it did,” he said, adding that the team did shoot itself in the foot sometimes during the contest. “We’ve got to play smarter than that. You can’t do these things against really good teams.”
Next week, the Blue Devils host No. 3 Vigor for their first home game of the year. ECHS traveled during its first five regular season games.
“It’s unreal,” Mason said when asked about playing at home next week. “It’s hard to play every week on the road. It’s tough. We’re excited to play at home in front of the home crowd. It’s a big thing for us.”
