CLARIFICATION: This article was updated to read that the Nichols paid for all of the food that’s being contributed by the local restaurants.
The second Gordon’s Giving will be held next Thurs., Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Day at St. Bellarmine Catholic Church’s Boland Hall at 12:30 p.m.
The annual lunch is held in honor of Gordon Nichols, who passed away in a car crash on Nov. 29, 2019.
Melissa Nichols, Gordon’s mother, said this is a time for the family to give back to the first responders for helping us before we even knew we needed them.
“This community is so gracious and has held us, supported and loved us,” Melissa said.
Melissa said again this year, they’ll be feeding first responders, employees and others at Atmore Community Hospital, at the nursing home and assisted living facilities.
Melissa said they will also take meals to those who were not able to leave home or be with family.
“We want to do the same this year, and will also reach out to others in need of a meal,” she said.
Melissa said the lunch honors Gordon because he loved helping others.
“He had a special gift of bringing people together,” she said. “We want to continue by giving back and providing a place to gather together to eat a meal.”
Melissa said go boxes will be delivered to those who aren’t able to leave their homes.
Melissa said she contacted several restaurants to help her cook, and all food provided is being paid for by the family.
