ADOC inmates die after being struck by vehicle in Marion County

One inmate was serving time for theft out of Escambia County, Ala.
An Alabama Department of Corrections inmate who was serving time for theft out of Escambia County, Ala. died after being hit by a single vehicle on Highway 278 in Marion County on Aug. 2.
According to the ADOC, Colt Eugene Morris and Ronnie Steven Cornelius, inmates at Hamilton Community-Based Facility, were working an Alabama Department of Transportation road crew when they were hit.
Cornelius and Morris succumbed to injuries from the crash and were pronounced deceased.
According to the ADOC, Cornelius and Morris were wearing reflective vests and safety policies were followed when the crash occurred.
Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Highway Patrol Division were notified and are investigating the crash.
Morris, 40, was serving a 30-year sentence for theft of property I out of Escambia County. Cornelius, 30, was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery I out of Colbert County.
Cornelius and Morris were a part of an 11-man road crew picking up trash along Highway 278, according to the ADOC. Additionally, the Law Enforcement Services Division of the ADOC was notified and emergency contact notifications have been made, according to a release.
