The Summit in Atmore is under new ownership.

Dr. Brent Yoder and Keith Hess acquired the assisted living facility on McRae Street in early June.

The facility was built in 2015, and features 24 rooms that can accommodate up to 28 residents, Administrator Hannah Helton said.

Helton said at present, The Summit has 23 residents, and three rooms are available.

Helton said the new owners are working to install new flooring and a fresh coat of paint in each room.

“We’re also in the process of getting the back porch screened in,” Helton said, adding they’re putting new landscaping on the property as well. “The environment is so much better.”

Helton said The Summit features a sidewalk that traverses all the way around the building.

“We have a few residents that walk it four times a day,” she said, adding that each lap equals a quarter-mile. “Residents can come and go as they please, and are able to drive. We’re not taking away their independence. They’re here for housing, meals and laundry.”

Helton said the facility stays pretty busy with activities every week.

“We have an exercise class every morning,” she said. “We play bingo, and today (Thursday) was national hip hop day, and we played old school hip hop.

“We do an activity every day,” she added. “On Monday, we had a wheel chair race day. On the first day of school, the residents dressed up and acted like it was the first day of school.”

A special activity will be held tomorrow, Sat., Aug. 12, at 4 p.m. as the Railway Arts Guild will be performing for the residents, Helton said.
