County BOE approves personnel recommendations, FY24 budget

The Escambia County Board of Education was expected to take a vote on whether or not to renew the contract for Superintendent Michele McClung last Thursday, however, with the item not on the agenda, the vote didn’t take place.
Board President Danny Benjamin announced at the close of the meeting that the contract item, along with other items, would be on the agenda for a regularly-called meeting set for next Thurs., Sept. 28, at 4:30 p.m. at the Brewton Central Office.
At the previous meeting of the board, Benjamin said the vote would be on the agenda for last Thursday’s meeting. With no explanation on why the date of the vote was changed, Benjamin said the vote would take place at the meeting in Brewton next week.
In other business Thursday, the Board approved the following:
• 2024 FY budget;
• Capital Plan for FY 2024 through FY 2028;
• Renewal of 2023/24 ATBE Automobile Fund Participation in the amount of $5,116.69 (bus insurance);
• Registration as Public Charter School Authorizer pursuant to the Alabama School Choice and Student Opportunity Act. McClung indicated that should a group wish to establish a charter school in the county that charter would require authorization from Escambia County Schools;
• the purchase of SentinelOne anti-virus software from CDW-G for $41,524.46 to paid paid from Cyberscurity Grant funds;
• purchase NextGen Financial Solution, NexGen Document Services and NextGen Housing effective Nov. 23 through Oct. 24 from Harris School Solutions for $54,474;
• Purchase an enhanced visitor management program from Centegix for three years for $77,605 to be paid from ESSER 3 funds;
• Contract with Bailey Education Group for administrator training and coaching support for $103,500 to be paid from ESSER 3 funds;
• renew subscription with Brightly Software, Inc., for maintenance work order and inventory software for $14,087.36 to be paid from ESSER 3 funds;
• Contract with Say It Sow LLC for speech-language services at $80 per hour from Oct. 1 through May 22, 2024 to be paid from IDEA funds;
• contract with West Instruction Services LLC for ACT skills and strategies professional development for teachers and ACT intensive training for juniors at Escambia County, Flomaton and W.S. Neal High Schools for $34,850 paid from CCR grant funds;
• contract with Presence Learning for clinical web-based service platform to be used by students determined to be at-risk for $69,345 to be paid from ESSER 3 funds;
• transportation fuel bid (diesel and gasoline‚ with Southern Energy Company for FY 2024;
• approved out-of-state travel for W.S. Neal FFA to attend 96th National Convention  in Indianapolis, Inc. for Oct. 31 through nov. 4 with funding provided to include 12 students;
• Approved the following personnel changes:
Retirement: Tina Garrett, teacher at Rachel Patterson Elementary, effect June 1, 2023;
Resignations:
Sarah Weaver, pre-k auxiliary teacher at A.C. Moore Elementary, effective Sept. 15;
Stacey Combs, six-hour lunchroom worker at Escambia County Middle School, effect Aug. 23;
Berna Milton, special education teacher at Escambia County Middle School, effective Sept. 22;
Victoria Alanis, special education aide at Flomaton High School, effective Sept. 8;
Pamela Wyatt, bookkeeper/secretary at W.S. Neal Elementary School, effective Sept. 29;
Donna Avery, six-hour lunchroom worker at W.S. Neal Elementary, effective Sept. 1.
Employment Changes:
Rachel Wiggins, from elementary teacher to math coach at W.S. Neal Elementary School, effect Oct. 2;
Cimmaron Wilson, from office aide to secretary/bookkeeper at W.S. Neal Elementary School, effective Oct. 2 replacing Pamela Wyatt;
Christopher Emmons from mechanic to transportation shop foreman at Atmore Bus Shop effective Sept. 15 replacing Billy Mills;
Sondra Fails, from six-hour lunchroom worker at Escambia County High School to bus driver at Atmore Bus Shop, effective Sept. 18 replacing Andrea Boatwright.
