Escambia Academy begins postseason at Chambers Friday
Having momentum on your side can be a good thing.
Escambia Academy’s going to use the momentum it gained after playing against a good Fort Dale Academy last week as the Cougars travel to face Chambers Academy this Fri., Nov. 3 in the first round of the AISA Class 2A state playoffs.
EA head football coach Gex Billups said Monday that even though the team lost 35-22 to FDA, the players played really well.
“Chambers, they’re very good,” Billups said. “They’re really good at what they do. They’re physical, and they’re fast. They’re well coached. Coach (Jason) Allen does a good job with them. We’re going to have to play our best game against them.”
The Cougars enter the postseason 3-7 overall. Chambers is 9-1. The last time the Rebels lost a game was a 14-6 loss to Lee-Scott in week one.
When asked what he believes the players need to replicate from last week’s game, Billups said being physical, winning the one-on-one battles, whether on tackles, going up and catching the ball and blocks are going to be key.
During the game last week, both EA and FDA were notched at 14-all at halftime. FDA pushed away with 6:31 left in the third quarter, and didn’t give up its lead.
EA quarterback Keller Coston and Quinton Odom connected for a score in the second half.
Billups said the players have done well over the last couple weeks, all things considering.
“We’ve made practices a little more physical, and that’s kind of showing,” he said. “We’ve had to change some things up offensively and defensively. The kids have come in everyday with a winning mindset even though we’re 3-7.”
This week at practice, Billups said he’s been emphasizing that everybody in the postseason is 0-0.
“Everything we did up until now doesn’t matter,” he said. “It’s going to take all 11 of us.”
Kick off LaFayette is at 7 p.m.
