The Atmore VFW Auxiliary 7016 is going to paint Atmore yellow this month to show its support for Vietnam veterans.

Auxiliary members will be present at the Atmore City Council meeting March 11 to accept a proclamation declaring March 30 Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.

“Since COVID, we have not had a ceremony because our Vietnam-era veterans don’t like to be in crowds, and there always seems to be a breakout of COVID around the time we would have our ceremony,” Atmore VFW Auxiliary’s Jenny Hutto said.

Hutto said the effort involves painting the city with yellow ribbon/bows.

“We would like for the ribbon/bows to be on display the week prior to March 30, from March 23-30,” she said. “The auxiliary will ask for permission to put up bows at the city hall, the train depot and Heritage Park.”
Hutto added that the auxiliary has also been in contact with Atmore Flower Shop, Godwins and The Yellow Garden and gave them a heads up to have yellow ribbon on hand for local residents and businesses to purchase bows.

“We really hope we have a great response to this, as we know they (Vietnam veterans) didn’t get the welcome home they deserved,” she said. “This is a small way we have of showing them that their community cares for them and we appreciate their service.”
