An Atmore woman was arrested April 17 on escape and assault charges, according to officials.

Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Monica Freeman, 51, was arrested and charged with escape III and domestic violence III assault.

McMann said the arrest stemmed after a citizen came to the lobby of the APD to report an alleged domestic violence incidence involving his girlfriend (Freeman) on the day of the arrest.

“The victim had visible injuries, which were documented by the officers,” McMann said. “The victim advised the officers that Freeman left the residence and he would pursue charges on Freeman at a later date.”

McMann said soon after leaving the police department, the victim returned to his residence in the 100 block of First Avenue and found that Freeman had returned.

“The victim called for assistance after being assaulted again by Freeman,” he said. “An officer arrived and noticed the victim had sustained additional injuries. Freeman was detained by the officer. As the officer was documenting the injuries and obtaining a statement from the victim, Freeman ran from the scene.”

McMann added additional officers responded to the area to search for Freeman and she was taken into custody a short time later.

She was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
