Atmore Police Department officials announced today they are in the process of starting a K-9 unit.

Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release the unit, once formed, will be tasked with narcotics detection, tracking and apprehending fleeing suspects, tracking missing persons and search and rescue incidents.
“The K-9 unit, combined with the Atmore Police Department’s Drone Program, and Project Eye provides another valuable asset for the community,” McMann said in a release. “We are interested in purchasing two canines and are seeking donations from individuals and businesses who are interested in assisting the department with the purchase.”
McMann said the APD is seeking donations to assist with not only purchasing the canines, but also purchasing necessary equipment, training and healthcare related to the canines.

McMann added that donations are tax deductible.
