An Atmore man was arrested May 29 on drug and tampering with physical evidence charges, according to officials.

Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Brent Simpson, 35, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence, resisting arrest and public intoxication.

McMann said at approximately 8:15 p.m. on the day of the arrest, an APD officer observed several mini bikes being operated recklessly and without any lights on Martin Luther King Avenue.

“As the officer approached the group of mini bikes, the group fled from the area,” McMann said. “One of mini bikes, operated by Brent Simpson, 35 of Atmore, became disabled. The officer contacted Simpson as he pushed the mini bike out of the roadway.”

McMann said during the interaction with Simpson, the officer noticed that his speech was slurred and had a strong odor of alcohol.

“Simpson began removing items from pockets and attempted to nonchalantly toss items a few feet away,” he said. “As the officer attempted to detain Simpson, he began pulling away from the officer. After a brief struggle Simpson was handcuffed.”

McMann said the items Simpson attempted to toss were recovered. A small amount of a white rock substance that field tested positive for crack cocaine, a THC vape pen and a small amount of synthetic marijuana (spice).

Simpson was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
