An Atmore man was arrested and charged on receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm and attempting to elude charges on June 1, according to officials.

Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Michael Weaver Jr., 25, was charged with receiving stolen property II, unlawful possession of a firearm and attempting to elude a police officer.

McMann said the arrest stems after an APD officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on North Main Street at approximately 9:40 p.m. The officer was attempting to make a traffic stop on a vehicle with an expired license plate.

“The vehicle continued for a short distance and came to a stop,” McMann said. “The driver, Michael Weaver Jr., age 25 of Atmore, fled on foot from the vehicle carrying an AR-15.”

McMann said during the short foot pursuit, Weaver was observed allegedly discarding the AR-15 in a nearby yard before being taken into custody.

“The AR-15 was reported stolen through the Demopolis Police Department,” he said. “Weaver was also previously convicted of manslaughter.”

Weaver was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
