Williams to be awarded ASWA Community College Athlete of the Year award

Atmore native and former Escambia County High School basketball standout Sheldon Williams will be awarded the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) Community College Athlete of the Year award.

Williams, currently playing basketball at Coastal Alabama Community College South, had a stellar 2023-24 season. According to reports, he was named the Alabama Community College (ACCC) Player of the Year as well as a first-team National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1 All-American selection.

Williams averaged 22.4 points, 14.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 3.2 blocks per game. He made some 58.9 percent from the field.

“It’s another big one on top of all the other ones I won this year,” Williams said to Lagniappe. “I’m proud of the moment and proud to be selected.”

Williams will be playing his final two seasons of eligibility at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Williams will receive his award during the ASWA’s Summer Convention this Sun., June 9, at Jacksonville State University.
