A convicted sex offender who failed to register with the Atmore Police Department has been arrested after years of flying under the radar while working at a business only a stone’s throw from two schools and a daycare facility.

Sanders

Investigator Robbie Williams said Roosevelt Oneal Sanders, Jr. 39, of Stockton does not live in Atmore, but has been violating the terms of his status as a freed sex offender by working at Jerry’s Alignment on West Nashville Avenue for a number of years, unbeknownst to both his employer and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department. Sanders was taken into custody Thursday, Nov. 8 after Baldwin Sheriff’s officials became suspicious of his employment.

“He was arrested and he had apparently registered with Baldwin County that day,” Williams said. “They asked about his employment and he told them he was a self-employed mechanic.”

Williams said Baldwin officials called the Atmore Police Department to confirm Sanders was indeed working in Atmore without registering.
“He lives in Stockton and he was registered in Baldwin County, but he needs to register here too since he works in Atmore,” Williams said. “We have to approve where sex offenders work. He can’t be within 2000 feet of a school or daycare. I wouldn’t have approved his anyway, because (Jerry’s) is within 2000 feet of two schools and a daycare.”

Williams said Sanders was charged with failing to register as a sex offender and working at a prohibited location. He was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center.

Sanders was released Tuesday on $10,000 bond.
