Woman jailed for dropping child in fire

An Atmore woman is in jail on $15,000 bond after witnesses say she passed out due to alcohol consumption and dropped her 8-month-old child into a fire burning in her yard early Saturday morning.

According to a release from Atmore Police Department, Amanda Pugh, 26, was arrested on charges of assault in the first degree and endangering the welfare of a child after officers received a call of a child being burned on the 600 block of Bream Street at approximately 12:53 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses on the scene told officers Pugh had indeed been drinking before passing out and dropping the infant, Zaida Martinez, into the fire causing burns to both of her legs.

Martinez was transported to Atmore Community Hospital before being taken by Lifeflight to USA Medical Center, where she remains in good condition.

The Department of Human Resources also responded to the scene and Pugh was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton, where she remained as of Tuesday morning.
