Harry and Janet Smith, at left, along with officials with the Atmore/PCI Animal Shelter and furry friends Reggie the cat and Bama the dog held an open house Saturday to benefit the shelter.

Atmore residents Harry and Janet Smith opened their hearts and their home Saturday in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Atmore/PCI Animal Shelter.

The Smiths, who live at 706 E. Horner Street, sold baked goods and held raffles for prizes in order to try and generate both monetary support and more traffic for the shelter.

Janet Smith said the idea for the event came from her family’s love of animals.

“For one, I have three cats of my own, but I have strays that I feed,” Smith said. “Harry and I both love animals. It’s just one of my passions.”

Saturday’s event was scheduled to run from 1 until 4 p.m., but Smith said she would be happy to keep things running later to allow more opportunities for the public to become involved.
