GECA finishing season with new play

A new work from local playwright Gene Embry was debuted this weekend by the Greater Escambia Council for the Arts and will be the group’s final production before the end of the current theater season.

Date.com, a play chronicling the first online dating experiences of an elderly couple looking for love late in life, features two casts. The first cast, featuring Tom McGinty as the bachelor, Frank; Wanetta McGinty as the bachelorette Mildred; Clara Cobb as Mildred’s friend, Phyllis; and Embry as Frank’s friend, Larry, performed during the play’s opening night Friday, as well as for showings Saturday and Sunday.

A second weekend of performances will take place Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28 and will feature Embry returning as Larry; Tom Jeter as Frank; Sharon Poulsen as Mildred; and Clara Cobb returning for the role of Phyllis.

Next weekend’s performances will be held Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door, at the Atmore News Office on South Main Street or from any GECA member.
