Twelve properties in Atmore will be abated soon, after the landowners did not clean up grass and weed nuisances on their lots.

At Monday’s meeting of the Atmore City Council, the council unanimously agreed to adopt City Resolution 2013-19, giving Code Enforcement Officer Greg Vaughn the authority to abate the nuisances on the properties.

During the Oct. 15 meeting, the council declared additional properties that had grass and weed ordinance violations, but several of those landowners have since come forward to either fix the problem or make a formal written objection to the removal of the grass or weeds.

The landowners who have not addressed the problem will have the grass or weeds removed and will be charged by the city.

The properties that will be abated include 143 Carver Ave., 0 Harris St. (three parcels), 95 Jones St., 116 Maple Drive, 1101 Montgomery Ave., 1121 S. Presley St., 305 School St., 114 Short St., 0 Wilson Ave., and 105 Wilson Ave.

In other business, the city council:

• Approved a beer license transfer to Diamond Gasoline No. 24.

• Approved a loan renewal from First National Bank & Trust. Council member Chris Walker, who is an employee of the bank, abstained from the vote.

• Tentatively approved the purchase of a $30,000 mini excavator from American Mowing and Drilling Inc., of Milton, Fla. The bid was the only one received by the city, and the excavator’s purchase is contingent on whether it meets the necessary specifications.

• Announced that the city will hold its two regular council meetings in December. The first will be Monday, Dec. 9, and the second will be Monday, Dec. 23. Both meetings will be at 4 p.m.

• Announced that there will be a District 4 town hall meeting Monday, Dec. 23, at 5:30 p.m.
