Investigation is ongoing, woman’s name not released

A Walnut Hill, Fla. woman — in fear for her life — shot a man in the abdomen Tues., Sept. 27, in the evening at a residence on the 5900 block of West Highway 4, according to the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office.

ECSO Public Information Officer Amber Southard said the shooting is an ongoing investigation.

“The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is working with the state attorney’s office to determine charges that might be filed against the male subject,” Southard said. “He was taken to a local hospital.”

Southard said the man who was shot is Joe Clay Howard, 39.

Southard said no charges have been filed against the woman.

“She was in fear for her life and defending herself in a domestic violence type shooting,” Southard said.

Southard said the shooting occurred around 8:30 Tuesday night.

The name of the woman hasn’t been released, and the case is still under investigation. Charges are pending.
