Scrounge around in your pantry and find food to donate as the 25th annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is this Sat., May 13.

Local postal carriers will be collecting food items for the drive, which has helped collect more than 1.5 billion pounds of food over the last 24 national drives.

Postal Carrier Tracy Sullivan said all of the non-perishable food donated in Atmore will stay in Atmore.

“The food will go down to the Atmore Christian Care Ministry,” she said.

Sullivan said rural carriers will participate in the drive as well.

Sullivan said sometime this week, residents will be receiving a card and a plastic bag, and if they don’t receive both, don’t let that stop them from donating.

According to the National Association of Letter Carriers’ website, non-perishable food consists of cereal, pasta, pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned furits and vegetables, canned meals (soups, chili and pasta), 100 percent juice, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey) and beans (canned or dry). Additionally, residents can donate healthy, low-sodium, low-sugar items such as beans, oatmeal and other whole grains, canola or olive oil.

Items to not donate include frozen food, homemade food or home-canned items, expired food or food in glass containers.

Food can be placed beside the mailbox on Saturday morning before the letter carrier arrives to your home. The NALC suggests placing food outside before 9 a.m.

Sullivan said the post office collected some 6,000 pounds of food last year.

“If they happen to miss Saturday, they can always bring the food to the post office,” Sullivan said.
