In spite of the weather, construction on the Park at OWA is still going at a pace for a slated opening of mid to late July, officials said Tuesday.

OWA Director Marketing and Public Relations Kristin Hellmich said even with the recent weather, everything is still on track for the amusement park to open next month.

“We have crews working around the clock and trying to take advantage of the opportunities for a break in the weather to complete construction,” she said. “We have crews on site (Tuesday) to complete what is necessary to get it open.”

Hellmich spoke recently at Rotary Club meeting about a month ago in Atmore.

Since then, she said all of the rides have been installed in the amusement park.

In October 2016, the Poarch Creek Indians, who have placed a $240 million investment in OWA, unveiled the project. Construction began during the same month.

“They are currently going through the testing,” she said. “All rides have been delivered. We have a total of 21 that’s been delivered on site. They are putting the finishing touches on the site and installation, and testing them to make sure all of the pieces work and are up to safety standards.”

Hellmich said one ride, The Crazy Mouth, a twisting roller coaster, is still being installed.

As far as the other parts of the park, Hellmich said there are two restaurants that have been constructed and will be open when the park opens next month. She added that there will be more restaurants coming into the park after it opens.

In the retail and dining area, which is around 154,000 square feet of space, Hellmich said the downtown district’s exterior portion is nearly complete and OWA is waiting on the tenants to come and start building their store fronts.

“The warehouse district is still under construction,” she said. “We are anticipating that both districts will be fully complete by early 2018. We will open with the first tenant in late August.”

When asked if the park will be open year round, Hellmich said they’ll be open year round from the start, but will cut back its hours of operation during the slow season.

The Park at OWA is located at 10113 Foley Beach Express, Foley, AL 36535.

Hellmich said updates on the park’s progress can be found on its website at www.visitowa.com. Ticket and the opening day date will be released in a few weeks.
