Escambia County Middle School finished as the top school in the state in the Alabama Do Math! Pay It Forward program for the month of November.

The school will host the Alabama Food Bank Association charity at a school wide Do Math! awards ceremony.

Additionally, ECMS will receive a $100 VISA school supplies gift card.

Annette McKey, a fourth grade teacher at ECMS whose class finished the highest in the school, said each student is given a benchmark test at the beginning of the year to gauge where their math level is.

“Once they have taken this test, the teacher will get a better understanding of what their needs of improvement are for the upcoming year,” McKey said. “This program is excellent, and it will not allow a student to go on to another lesson until they have mastered the skill that was previously taught. Once they have mastered the lesson, then the program will advance them on to more advanced levels, but once only on their level.”

McKey said the program allows teachers to monitor their students’ growth in math.

McKey said her students worked real hard to achieve their goal in Think Through Math, which was to pass at least two lessons a week.

She said the students have an hour a week in the computer lab that they get to spend in the program, and extra time in the classroom.
