Fitness stations installed at Tom Byrne, Houston Avery

Fitness is in at Tom Byrne and Houston Avery Parks in Atmore after the city installed fitness stations along the walking and running path at both parks recently.

The exercise equipment at both parks were installed through a health and wellness grant from Auburn University’s ALProHealth Program, officials said. The grant is a part of Alabama’s health initiative to prevent and reduce obesity by supporting health and wellness in Escambia County.

“We had a committee meeting, and decided we needed to have something to do with exercise,” Mayor Jim Staff said.

There are six exercise equipment stations at Tom Byrne and Houston Avery. Each station is designed to work different body parts. The city is still installing the fitness stations.

The equipment, which includes a chest press, balance circle, hopping station, cardio walker and others, provides aerobic work outs, which can be used in conjunction with walking and running, according to officials.
