A resurfacing and striping project four years in the making that touches three districts in Escambia County is about to begin, officials said.

District 3 Commissioner Larry White said the project, a Federal Access System (FAS) project, is slated to begin in September. The federal funds must be used on FAS routes as classified by the United States Department of Transportation, he added.

White said the resurfacing project runs from Hwy. 113 and includes County Road 18 west to County Road 27, and then north on County Road 27 until it goes across Sardine Bridge to Butler Street and County Road 45 to the county line.

White said the county’s road department has replaced several crossdrains, or culverts, on Hwy. 45 to get ready for the project.

“The money has been used on a FAS route,” he said. “We’re glad to get this project under way.”

Total cost of the project is more than $2 million, and the majority of which will be covered by the federal government, White said.

White said depending on the weather, the project should take 60 to complete.

White said the project touches Districts 3, 4 and 5.
