In 1973, 45 years ago, residents in Atmore were looking forward to the fair and the circus that the Jaycees were sponsoring. The fair was to be first followed in two weeks by the circus.

The Escambia County Historical Society was planning a trip to visit the site of Fort Mims, which was being excavated. In fact I have told you about those in charge of the excavation making a mistake of disturbing the soil. They should have waited until someone knew the right procedure.

There was an article in The Atmore Advance warning that polio was still a threat to the state.

I was watching a program on television that showed an old iron lung machine. I thought we were through with all that, but I do remember when it was an awful scare.

Greenlawn Hospital, in a response to an article in the Pensacola Journal, stated that it did indeed welcome new babies to the hospital.

The police department came into the new world of computers to help them combat crime.

Atmore was undergoing a economic boom, with new stores popping up all over. TG&Y had a grand opening at its new store on Lindbergh Ave. in the Adams Shopping Center. West Brothers opened in the same shopping center. Bedsole’s had a full page ad in The Atmore Advance stating their good prices. They must have been competitors.

All city vehicles were told to be careful with the gasoline. There was a shortage of gas and was becoming hard to get. Later, there was a full page ad from AMOCO apologizing for the shortage. The city did get some relief with gas for city vehicles but future supplies were still uncertain.
