The second clue for the 2019 Dash4Cash scavenger hunt will be announced March 29 at a Block Party in Atmore on Ridgeley Street, according to officials.

The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with Drive Time’s DJ and KJ, along with the Atmore community, will have a much larger presence in this year’s game, according to the chamber’s Facebook page.

Last year, the Drive Time show began the hunt because it wanted to be a positive influence in Brewton and the whole community, Ken James, owner of Bossman Productions, and the “KJ” of the duo said.

“We started doing old school radio stuff like contests,” James said in a telephone interview. “We had like name the TV theme song contest. You’re never going to top that as far as people getting engaged.”

James said the idea to hold a scavenger hunt came to him one morning at 2:30 when he had to let his dogs outside.

“I stood there thinking and I thought, ‘I wonder if people would hunt for $1,000, like a scavenger hunt type of thing,’” he said. “I said, ‘well, OK. I’m going to check that out.’”

James said they decided to announce the competition in passing on their streaming show on Facebook, and from there, it went viral.

“That Friday, we announced it and said it in passing like, ‘Look, there’s $1,000 out there. If any businesses or people who would like to put in a pot, we’re not keeping a dime — anything you want to put in.’

“People started throwing money into that thing,” he said. “It turned into something special. We did it the Friday before spring break. I thought after the third clue it would be found, I never envisioned it going on for 30 days like it did.”

Eventually, a family found the pot, which was for a total of $11,000, in addition to the numerous gift cards that were donated, James said.

James said he hid it at the AT&T tower between Brewton and Repton one month before the competition began in 2018.

Additionally, he said he’s already hidden this year’s pot.

This year, in addition to the cash prize, there will be hidden QR codes that hunters can search for and win merchandise as well, according to chamber officials.

James said they’ll be doing a live stream of the show on Facebook during the block party in Atmore.
