The American Legion and Women’s Auxiliary have much to celebrate.

The two local veterans organizations will be celebrating the American Legion’s 100^th Centennial on Thurs., Sept. 12.

Additionally, Atmore’s American Legion is celebrating its 96^th birthday during the event, which will begin at 6 p.m. outside of the Main Street building.

Commander Billy Elder said the post will be open at 5 p.m.

“This post was chartered on Feb. 23, 1923,” Elder recalled.

Elder said during the event, Haskew Middleton, who was a member of the legion for 75 years before his passing earlier this year, will be recognized as well. Middleton’s family will be receiving a recognition during the event, Elder said.

Elder said Middleton was the longest-continuing member in the state.

Earlier this week, members of the legion, along with the women’s auxiliary, were busy cleaning and replacing pictures inside of the building.

Chaplain Jack Wright re-painted the white crosses out front next to the memorial. Paul Chason, adjutant, helped Wright clean the memorial’s marble.
