Escambia County High School is on the most-recent list of failing schools, according to reports.

More than 74 schools, plus one public charter school are on the failing school lost, according to AL.com. In 2018, there were 76 schools in 27 districts.

The Alabama State Department of Education’s failing schools list is based on 2019 test results in math and reading from the ACT Aspire test. The list includes the bottom 6 percent of all schools in the state. Since the administration of last the 2016 test, the state voted to discontinue using it as a measuring stick to assess schools, according to Advance archives.

“Each year, the state of Alabama releases what they deem as the lowest 6 percent of schools,” ECHS Principal Dennis Fuqua said. “Escambia County High School is on that list again. However, being on that list does not take away from the great things we have going academically.

“This list only takes into account one ACT test score from one day of testing; whereas, the school report card presents a more comprehensive look at our school’s achievements.”

Fugua said each year, the school’s report card has increased by four points.

“And, based on the capability of this junior class, I expect our score to increase by at least four more points,” he said. “I have a lot of faith in this current junior class and all of our students. The faculty, staff and students of Escambia County High School work to improve every day, and that’s what it’s always great to be a Blue Devil.”

ECHS is the only school listed as failing in the Escambia County School System.
