A tornado watch has been issued for several counties in southwest Alabama and northwest Florida, including Escambia County, until 8:00 p.m. A Tornado Watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes.

A cold front is approaching from the west. A squall line is moving along with the cold front. Thunderstorms, some possibly severe, are moving along and ahead of the squall line. These thunderstorms may bring heavy rain and strong winds as high as 55 – 60 mph. The atmosphere is unstable and strong wind shear exists, making the formation of tornadoes possible. The squall line should move through Escambia County in the late afternoon or early evening hours.

You should be aware of changing conditions. In case of a tornado, take shelter inside a sturdy building. Stay in an interior room on the lowest floor of the building.
