Boys, Girls State announced

Local high school students selected to represent the Atmore area at the 2012 Boys State and Girls State conventions were formally announced at Monday’s regular City Council meeting.

The students were chose by the American Legion Post 90 oversight committee with input from local teachers, counselors and principals.

The 2012 Girls State class is: Melanie Heard, Northview High School; Allie Brooks, Escambia Academy; Jazmine McGinnis, Escambia County High School.

Students selected for the 2012 Boys State class include: Blake Clark, Michael Glick, Andrew Sasser, Escambia Academy; Domineque Hubert, Escambia County High School; Corry Baggett, Marcus Johnson, Northview High School; Jason Knight, Jay High School.

Boys and Girls State participants will spend a week over the summer at conventions learning about government and leadership. Boys from Alabama will spend the week in Tuscaloosa while boys and girls from Florida will spend a week in Tallahassee. Girls State participants from Alabama will spend the week in Troy.

The American Legion Post 90 oversight committee is comprised of Jimmy Beck, Rodger Presley and Jack Lufkin.
