Atmore residents medal in State Games

The 30th annual Alabama Sports Festival Foundation State Games recently concluded in Birmingham’s BJCC Arena and several Atmore residents walked away as medalists.

As a team, the Atmore Trouble 12U basketball squad finished the competition in second place, leaving the games with a silver medal.

Atmore also dominated in the pistol and rifle category with Samantha L Bullard earning two gold medals and one silver medal. Bullard finished first in the 17 to 18-year-old category of the 10M Air Rifle Standing Precision event as well as the Position Air Rifle Precision event. She finished second in the Position .22 event.

The State Games event was organized in 1982 by the United States Olympic Committee in order to develop a grassroots Olympic-style competitions in Alabama.

Opening ceremonies for this year’s games were held at the BJCC Arena Friday, June 22 at 5:45 p.m. The games included a parade of athletes, entertainment, music, music, an “Honoring of Heroes,” ceremony, an Olympic Torch relay and lighting at the cauldron. The games included 25 different sports and over 100 sporting events and gave competing athletes the chance to win one of four $2,500 academic scholarships.
