The Escambia County Middle Preparatory School girls’ basketball team took the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament title with a 26-21 win over Marshall Middle School Monday.

Jaquanda Webster was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while Jade Adams and Tyranie Henderson were named all-tournament performers.

“It gave a chance to size them up,” coach Reginald Adams said of the extra game. “We played better. Our guard play is what helped us.”

Adams said Webster played especially well after Jade Adams went down with an injury in the third quarter.

“She really stepped up,” Adams said. “She did a great job passing the ball.”

He said Erica Staples also came up big with a couple timely three-point shots.

The game was tied at 13 at the half and stayed neck-and-neck throughout the third quarter with the score remaining tied at 19. ECMPS was able to pull away in the fourth quarter and pick up the championship win.
