The Escambia County Blue Devils moved to 5-0 in area play with a 63-54 win over Clarke County Tuesday.

The win puts them one game closer to hosting the area tournament, with area foe UMS-Wright at 4-1.

“Worst case scenario we end up deadlocked for first place and it will be decided by a coin toss,” said coach Earlando Courtney said Friday. “If we win tonight we host the tournament.”

The Blue Devils played the Bulldogs Friday, but results weren’t available as of press time.

ECHS was led by guard Fred Knight, who scored 25 points in the win. Desmond Williams added 17.

The win came on the heels of an 85-69 double overtime loss to rival Baldwin County High School last Friday.

“We did well,” Courtney said. “We always play well after a loss. We come out the next game bound and determined not to make the same mistakes.”

The Blue Devils were cold from the field, shooting six-of-36 in the first half, but only down two points to Clarke County at halftime.

“We came out added pressure and pushed the lead,” he said. “We totally dominated the second half.”

ECHS will host J.F. Shields Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for senior night.
