Escambia County High School Blue Devils’ football coach Lev Holly said he expects big things this season from all of his players, but a few have made a statement in the preseason.

Starting quarterback Chris Johnson will return this season and, as is expected, will be a major piece of the offense, Holly said.

In addition, however, ECHS has “some kids that are starting to blossom,” the coach said. One of those is 6-foot-1-inch wide receiver Devonte Williams.

“He had a great offseason,” Holly said. “He’s a great student in the classroom and has the will to get it done.”

Another member of the the Blue Devils’ offensive arsenal is running back and linebacker Gaetyn Thames.

Joining Thames as a linebacker will be Wesley Jefferson in the Mike, or middle linebacker position.

“He’s a strong kid who’s smart,” Holly said. “He’s a leader who understands teamwork and what we’re trying to do. He’s a hard worker, who’s dependable and on time.”

Trevor Williams is a player to look out for on defense while Travon Williams is a hybrid player, who along with the rest of the players listed started last year. Holly said he has the same qualities as the rest of the players mentioned.

“We’ve got some talent and experience coming back,” Holly said.

In addition to game breakers, the team has role players that will factor in to each game, the coach said.

Holly said while he plans to mix up defensive looks, the team will run a base 4-2 with four down lineman and two linebackers. The offense will run a balanced running and passing attack.

For Holly, this season is about consistency, protecting the ball, staying healthy and working hard.

“We’ll be technically sound with good fundamentals,” Holly said. “If we don’t turn the ball over we’ll have a chance to win some games.”
