Devils finish as area runner-up

Escambia County High School’s Blue Devils lost a pair of baseball games against Class 5A, Area 2, opponent Jackson last week.

On Thursday, ECHS hosted area opponent Jackson in a game at Tom Byrne Park. The Blue Devils lost that game by a score of 4-1.

On Friday, the Blue Devils traveled to Jackson for another game. This time, the Aggies prevailed by a score of 6-1.

The losses dropped ECHS’s overall record to 7-10, and a 3-2 record in area play.

ECHS finished as the runner-up in Area 2, and will travel to play a 4 p.m. doubleheader at St. Paul’s on Friday in the first round of the state playoffs. If necessary, a third game will be Saturday at 2 p.m.
Jackson will host Faith Academy.

Coach Michael Parker said the Blue Devils had some chances to win Thursday’s game, but could not “come up with a big two-out hit.”

“We didn’t hit very well in either of the games against Jackson,” Parker said. “We had decent pitching and decent defense, we just weren’t able to get those big hits.”

In Thursday’s game, Devon Robinson was 1-for-2 and scored a run, Rashaan Flavors was 1-for-2, and Tanner Smith was 2-for-3 with a double.

Friday, Gaetyn Thames finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Marquis Brooks was 2-for-3, and Smith was 1-for-3.
