EA girls win 2 at Milton tourney

Escambia Academy’s girls basketball team finished as consolation champions at a tournament in Milton, Fla., over the weekend.

The Lady Cougars took a loss on Friday, the first day of the two-day tournament, because the Canoe School’s football team was playing in the AISA Class 2A state championship. EA beat Autauga Academy 30-20 to win its second state title in four years.

EA’s girls beat Central Christian 28-22, and S.L. Jones 36-17 in the tournament.

Ashlyn Glick was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line; and Victoria Sawyer, who was chosen for the all-tournament team, led EA with 14 points. Cassidy Murphy and Glick scored six points each.

EA led 10-8 after the first, 14-12 at the break and 17-12 going into the fourth period.

In the second game against S.L. Jones, the Lady Cougars led 11-3 after the first, 13-5 at halfime and 27-13 at the end of the third period.

Sawyer and Murphy scored 10 points each; Glick chipped in six points; Gumapac and Mary Thompson Lancaster had four points apiece.

Murphy grabbed 12 rebounds, Glick had eight, three assists and two steals and Gumapac had five. Murphy also had four blocks and one assist.

“The girls have been practicing really hard over the last few weeks and it definitely shows,” Lady Cougars coach Mandi Carter said. “Not only did they play great basketball, they exhibited great character on the floor. As a coach, I could not be any prouder of our Lady Cougars.”
