Motocross fans are in for a treat this weekend as Atmore MX holds their grand opening Sunday under new leadership and a completely new track design.
The track, which is owned by Bobby Hadley, is being leased by Alan McWilliams who said he plans to bring more action to the track as well as upgrades.
“I plan on bringing regional and national events to the track,” McWilliams said. “We are also upgrading the facility and creating a new track design. We are going to make the good track that is here even better.”
Along with a new track design, McWilliams has other plans for upgrades to increase racing action.
He said he wants to make some additions to the track to brighten things up as well as add accomdations for RVs.
“In the future, we will be putting in RV hookups and adding lights, so there is the chance for night racing,” McWilliams said.
For McWilliams, motocross is more than just another sport.
He said it is a great sport for the entire family.
“This is going to be a fun family atmosphere,” McWilliams said. “It’s one of the very few sports where a whole family can be involved all on the same day. In baseball or soccer, everything is seperate or at different places, but with this riders from four years old all the way to riders in their 60s compete on the same track the same day.”
This weekend’s event features the merging of competitors from the Gulf Coast Championship Series and the Central Alabama Series as well as an ATV shootout.
McWilliams said it would be great for anyone to come out and watch.
“It’s an extreme adrenaline sports,” McWilliams said. “All the racing and riders will impress anyone who comes out.”
Racing begins Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and will conclude at 5 p.m.
