ECMS boys, girls pick up wins over Spanish Fort Toros

Escambia County Middle School hosted the Spanish Fort Toros on Monday night and picked up a 36-27 win to improve to 3-1 this season.

The Eagles continue to control the tempo against their opponents as they led for the majority of the game.

Eagles head coach Robert Smith said his team played strong against a good competitor.

“Our boys are really starting to play as a team,” Smith said. “Overall, they played a great game against a tough opponent.”

The Toros jumped ahead in the first quarter grabbing the lead 6-4.

When the second quarter began, the Eagles would grab the lead and never look back.

In the second quarter they outscored Spanish Fort 14-6 to take a 18-12 lead into halftime.

Following halftime, the Eagles played like a team as they scored six points to Spanish Fort’s five in the third quarter as they led 24-17 when the final quarter started.

In the final period, the Eagles showed why they are a strong team as they extended their lead and outscored the Toros to win 36-27.

Smith said Jerome Webster did a good job transitioning from forward to guard.

“Jerome was moved to guard and he used his ball handling skills to lead the team to a victory,” he said.

Webster finished the game with seven points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds.

Eagle David Johnson led the team with 11 points. He also recorded seven rebounds, three steals and one block.

Gordon Brooks also recorded seven points and posted three assists, two steals and one rebound.

Maleek McMillian led the team in rebounds pulling down eight. He also scored five points to go with four blocks and two steals.

Anthony Miles had four points, five rebounds and one block, while Jay Brown had two points and two assists.

The Eagles next game is on Thursday, Dec. 2 at UMS-Wright. Games tipoff at 4:30 p.m.

Lady Eagles 25

Lady Toros 18

The Lady Eagles of Escambia County Middle School added another victory to their record on Monday as they defeated the Spanish Fort Lady Toros 25-18 at ECMS.

The Lady Eagles dominated the first quarter as they pulled ahead 11-1, but the Lady Toros cut into that lead in the second quarter outscoring ECMS 7-4, but the Lady Eagles led at halftime 15-8.

In the second half, neither team could gain ground as they battled to a 10-10 tie in the second half with the Lady Eagles first half dominance securing the 25-18 win.

Lady Eagle Nicole Johnson led the team with a double-double recording 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also posted six steals and five blocks.

Other Lady Eagles scoring points were Ychelle Walker with five; Laticia Barron with four and Dominique Becham with two.

Walker also recorded three steals and two assists, while Barron recorded four steals and two rebounds.

The Lady Eagles next game is on Thursday, Dec. 2 at UMS-Wright. Games tipoff at 4:30 p.m.
