Lady Blue Devils defeat Lady Spartans

Escambia County’s Lady Blue Devils started a winning streak with their second consecutive victory after defeating the Saraland Lady Spartans 41-31 last Friday night in Atmore.

The Lady Blue Devils (7-10, 1-2) controlled the momentum in the contest and were able to play some younger players throughout the game.

Lady Blue Devils head coach Lorenzo Jones said his team was happy to earn another win.

“We are grateful to come away with a win,” he said. “We don’t have a lot to celebrate about though because our foul shooting was poor and we missed some layups. The girls just weren’t focused.”

The Lady Blue Devils opened the game by outscoring the Lady Spartans and gaining a comfortable 15-2 lead in the first quarter.

The Lady Spartans were able to cut the deficit in the second quarter as they outscored the Lady Blue Devils 11-7, but ECHS still led 22-13 at halftime.

Following halftime, the Lady Blue Devils again extended their lead and held on to pick up the win.

A strong third quarater helped ECHS pull further ahead of the Lady Spartans as they outscored them 13-8.

With a 35-21 lead to open the fourth quarter, the Lady Blue Devils cruised to the end of the game with the Lady Spartans outscoring them 10-6, but still coming away with their first area win 41-31.

Jones said this win helps his team’s chances at fighting for an area title.

“The good news is that we won our first area game,” he said. “We needed this to help us bolster our chances at the area title. We hope we can continue to build on the success we are having.”

The Lady Blue Devils were led in points by guards Jasmine Ireland and Diamond Williams.

Ireland posted 15 to go along with four steals and two assists, while Williams recorded 14 points, eight boards, two assists and two steals.

Lady Blue Devil Tiffany Madison recorded a double-double with 11 boards and 11 steals to go along with four points and one assist.

Breanna Martin and KeKe Crenshaw each scored three points. Martin also had eight rebounds and three steals, while Crenshaw had three assists and one rebound.
