ECHS track, field athletes finish in top 8 at Class 4A state meet

Escambia County’s boys track and field athletes finished in the top eight in events of the AHSAA Class 4A state meet May 2-4.

Elijah Thomas finished second in the boys long and triple jumps with jumps of 21 feet, 10.25 meters and 44.6 meters, respectively; and Jaylen Young finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.06 seconds.

ECHS track and field coach Ahmaud Taylor said on the school’s athletics page that while he wasn’t able to be there due to obligations with the military, he was proud of the team’s effort.

“Elijah Thomas and Jaylen Young finished off the year placing in the top eight in the state in their events,” Taylor said. “I’m proud of the entire track team for the relentless effort they’ve put into every meet this year. To my seniors, it was an honor being able to coach you all this year and each and every one of you made this year extremely fun for me. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you all. Next year, we’ll be back better than ever.”

Results from the state meet include by event:

  • Boys 100-meter dash – Thomas, seventh, 12.73 seconds
  • Boys 300-meter hurdles – Young, 17th place, 45.65 seconds
  • Boys javelin throw – James Whatley, ninth place, 149 feet
  • Boys shot put – Whatley, 12th place, 41-09.00 feet
