EA Cougars improve to 14-0

With a strong team performance that included seven players scoring points, the No. 7 Escambia Academy Cougars demolished the Jackson Eagles 65-46 on Monday night in Jackson.

The Cougars (14-0, 4-0) were led to the win by Jordan Sasser’s 14 points and Keaton Maher’s double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. Sasser also recorded two assists, two steals and one rebound, while Maher posted two blocks a steal and an assist.

The Cougars trailed the majority of the first half, but stepped up in the third and fourth quarters to earn their 14-0 consecutive victory of the season.

The Eagles came out of the gate strong as they pulled ahead of the Cougars outscoring them 16-13 in the first quarter.

The Cougars were able to cut into the Eagles’ narrow lead in the second quarter as they pulled within one point of Jackson outscoring them 15-13 before halftime. At the break, Jackson led Escambia 29-28.

Following halftime, the Cougars battled back and took the game over as they cruised to a victory.

Escambia Academy played unstoppable in the third quarter as they began decimating the Eagles outscoring them 18-7.

With a 46-36 lead heading into the final quarter, the Cougars continued to pound Jackson as they extended their lead outplaying the Eagles 19-10 to earn the win 65-46.

Cougar Brandon Goddard finished the win in double-digits as he scored 11 points, while pulling down four boards and snatching a steal.

Escambia Academy’s Darren McGhee and Wesley Steadham each added nine points with McGhee recording six rebounds, five assists and two steals and Steadham getting six rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Tanner Kirk finished with six points for EA and also posted four rebounds and an assist.

Cougar Jaylen Henry rounded out the scoring for EA with four points and an assist.

Eagles JV 25

Following their runner-up finish in the state tournament, the Escambia Academy Cougars junior varsity defeated the Jackson Eagles 44-25 on Monday night.

The Cougars (12-1) were in a tight match up early against the Eagles, but pulled away in the second half.

Escambia Academy jumped out to a slim lead in the first quarter as they outscored the Eagles 11-9.

In the second quarter, the Eagles fought past the Cougars outscoring them 8-5 to go into halftime leading 17-16.

After halftime, the game was for the Cougars’ taking as they played strong in the last two quarters to come away with a win.

In the third quarter, the Cougars outhustled the Eagles up and down the court as they scored 16 points and held the Eagles to four to take the lead 32-21.

Escambia Academy again held the Eagles to four points in the fourth quarter and added 12 points to their total to earn their 12th win 44-25.

Garrett Kirk led EA with a double-double as he scored 14 points and 11 rebounds. He also had two steals and an assist.

Jacob Dean added 11 points for the Cougars’ win and also posted eight rebounds, three blocks, three assists and three steals.

Zac Demco and Brett Helton each scored seven points for EA. Demco finished with 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks, while Helton grabbed two steals.

Tucker recorded three points and seven rebounds, while Kevin Gumapac scored two points with two rebounds and a block.

Scott Brantley recorded four rebounds and three assists for the Cougars.
