Amber Huskey’s stellar career of representing the Escambia Academy Lady Cougars came to an end on a high note last Saturday at the AISA All-Star game in Montgomery.

At the conclusion of the game, Huskey was selected as the West team’s Most Valuable Player for her efforts during practice and the game, which was won by the East squad.

Huskey said her experience at the game was one she will remember.

“I enjoyed meeting and playing with the other girls,” she said. “It was a goal that I wanted to accomplish and to win the MVP, while doing it makes it that much better.”

Participating in the game not only gave Huskey the opportunity to play with different teammates, but it also gave her a bird’s eye view of how other coaches handle practices.

Huskey said her conclusion on the practice is that her own coach, Heath Gibson, holds tougher practices.

“The coaches at the All-Star game held good practices, but they were different than what I was used to,” she said. “Coach Gibson’s practices are harder on our team from what I could tell. He implements more running his for conditioning, so I think his are more difficult.”

Once the game tipped off, Huskey performed how she always does with her best foot forward, but at one point that foot did not have a shoe.

Huskey said something she will always remember about the game is losing a shoe during the game.

“We were playing and my shoe came off,” she said. “I didn’t have time to put it back on, so I kept playing and ran down the court without it on.”

Now that her high school basketball career has come to a conclusion, Huskey will always remember her time at EA.

She said she has a lot of good memories playing for the Lady Cougars.

“I’ll always remember scoring my 1,000th point,” Huskey said. “Our trips to the Elite 8 will carry with me too. I have several things that I’ll be able to look back on.”
