JDCC gains, loses players

Coming off one of their best seasons, Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball coach Allen Gainer figured he would have a good nucleus of returning players for the 2011-12 season.

While he has gained some new faces on his team, Gainer said the biggest news is not who he is gaining, but who he is losing.

“We expected to lose Kahlee Tyler and Daryl Duncan due to graduation and that was already going to be big shoes to fill,” Gainer said. “However, we did not expect to lose Braylon Lazare and Eric Vidrine, who is pursuing other opportunities closer to home or Chris Peak, who is pursuing opportunities with baseball. Some of the decisions were made late, so it put us behind the eight ball a bit for filling those spots.”

With those spots now open on his team, Gainer has signed two players with others hoping to come at a later time.

“So far, we have signed 5-10 point guard Rodney Scott from Jeff Davis High School in Montgomery and 6-3 multi position player Greg Crum from Williamson in Mobile,” Gainer said. “Rodney is a talented ball handler and shooter and should provide us with consistency from the 3-point line that we were lacking last year. He is very adept at getting into the paint and making things happen, so I believe he will be a fan favorite. Greg is a tremendous athlete that can score in a variety of ways. He is talented both around the basket and at the 3-point line. He will be a versatile player for us that will allow us to have small lineups with him at the power forward spot or big lineups with him at the off guard spot.”
