Eagles move to 2-0

The Escambia County Middle School Eagles basketball teams moved to 2-0 on Thursday as the seventh and eighth grade boys teams picked up wins over the Central Baldwin Middle School Bears in Robertsdale.

The eighth grade earned a 24-19 victory, while the seventh graders had another huge win beating the Bears 36-5.

A strong first half propelled the Escambia County Middle School Eagles eighth grade basketball team to a victory on Thursday night.

The Eagles (2-0) grabbed the lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they pushed past the Central Baldwin Middle School Bears 24-19 in Robertsdale on Thursday.

In the first quarter, the Eagles pushed out ahead of the Bears as they outscored the host team 7-3.

The Bears kept things close in the seocnd period as they tied the Eagles 7-7 to keep the ECMS lead at four points ahead 14-10.

Following halftime, the Eagles and Bears played a tight second half with ECMS holding onto a slim lead in the third and fourth periods.

The Eagles were able to extend their lead in the third period as they outscored the Bears 6-4 to pull ahead 20-14 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Bears finally outscored ECMS scoring five points and holding the Eagles to four points, but the early lead held for ECMS as they won 24-19.

Despite the win, the Eagles did not play to expectations, ECMS head basketball coach Robert Smith said.

“We had poor free throw shooting and did not execute on offense,” he said. “We played flat, but we did enough to win.”

The Eagles were led by Trae Thompson, Anthony Fountain and Dalvin Patterson with each scoring six points. Thompson also had five rebounds, while Fountain had eight and Patterson finished with 12.

Gatelyn Thames, Devontae Lee and Darrin Prime all scored two points for the Eagles. Michael Pettway finished with one point.

The Eagles next game will be Monday, Nov. 28 at home against Daphne. Games begin at 4:30 p.m.

The Escambia County Middle School Eagles seventh grade basketball team dominated the Central Baldwin Middle School Bears on Thursday night winning 36-5.

The Eagles (2-0) crushed the Bears for four quarters only allowing them to score in two periods of play.

In the first quarter, the Eagles jumped out to a 12-0 lead and extended the lead to 20-3 by halftime.

Following halftime, ECMS continued to control the game only allowing the Bears two points.

In the third period, ECMS added six points to their impressive lead to go into the final quarter ahead 26-3.

The Eagles outscored the Bears 10-2 in the fourth quarter to come away with the 36-5 win.

Earning the victory was made possible by good offense and defense, ECMS head basketball coach Robert Smith said.

“We played well on offense and defense” he said. “Our players had poor free throw shooting though.”

The Eagles were led by Chille Ford’s 14 points. Ford also had eight rebounds.

Eric Williams finished the game with 10 points and three rebounds for ECMS.

Jomontrae Lee led the Eagles with 10 rebounds and had two points.
