A special-called meeting of the Escambia County Board of Education on Thursday afternoon led to the accepted retirement of Escambia County Middle School athletic director Robert Smith.

Smith turned in his resignation from ECMS on Jan. 24.

Along with holding the duties of athletic director for Eagles’ programs, Smith was the head coach of the seventh and eighth-grade boys basketball teams and also served as an assistant coach on the Escambia County Blue Devils football team.

Details of the plan to find a new athletic director for ECMS have not been released at this time.

Escambia County Middle School principal Linda Shuford could not be reached for comment Friday as of presstime.
