Escambia County Lady Blue Devil Diamond Williams sets up a play earlier in the season.

With a chance to host a subregional game on the line, the Escambia County Lady Blue Devils blinked first in their Class 4A Area 1 Tournament Championship game against the UMS-Wright Lady Bulldogs last Saturday in Mobile.

The Lady Blue Devils (20-5, 4-2) came into the game looking to pull an upset over the regular season area champions, but had trouble finding an offensive rhythm, as they lost 50-28.

Escambia County never had a grasp the game trailing from start to finish with the Lady Bulldogs running away with the contest in the fourth quarter.

In the first period, ECHS struggled to find any points, as UMS-Wright jumped out to an 8-3 lead.

The offensive woes continued for the Lady Blue Devils in the second period, as the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead. With the eight mintues before halftime, UMS-Wright put together a 12-5 run to roll into the break leading 20-8.

Following the break, ECHS found themselves hitting more shots, but the chance for a comeback had dwindled in the first half.

The Lady Blue Devils took the advantage in the third quarter, but their 12-11 run did little to dent the deficit they already faced.

Trailing 31-20 entering the fourth quarter, the Lady Blue Devils only managed eight points in the final period of play giving up 19 to the game’s hosts to fall 50-28.

Lady Blue Devil Diamond Williams was the offensive leader for ECHS in the loss. Williams finished the game with 13 points.

Nicole Johnson added six points for the Lady Blue Devils, while Brianna Martin finished with four points.

The Lady Blue Devils will now travel to Jackson on Friday to take on the Jackson Lady Aggies in the subregional game. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

The winner gets a berth in the regional tournament at the University of South Alabama.

Lady Blue Devils head coach Janice Kidd said she had no comments about her team’s game against UMS-Wright or the upcoming game against Jackson.
